Buckland town meeting approved a $2.7 million town budget but voted down both regional school assessments. Voters backed a $500,000 Proposition 2½ override for the June 2 ballot while rejecting the Mohawk Trail Regional School District's $3,291,919 assessment 88-65 and Franklin County Technical School's $332,955 assessment 63-51. Finance Committee member Paula Consolo said the panel's unanimous non-recommendation, a first in her 20 years on the board, was "a reality check" and "a cry for action" over the state's rural school funding formula.
School Committee representative Martha Thurber said Mohawk had already cut 21.1 positions and used $1.1 million in offset funds this year, down from $1.7 million last year. Officials said Buckland will likely need a special town meeting to fund the schools no matter the outcome.
